When It Comes to Personal Stories of Those Who Overcame Slavery, with Dr. William B. Allen

Rachel Abrahams

“That’s my story no matter how you look at it whether you’re looking at stories large or stories small the reality is the truth is in the stories that the people who live the stories will tell.”

My Story: A Personal Account of Resilience and Determination

Introduction

This is not just the story of well-known figures in history like Booker T Washington, Ida B Wells, Frederick Douglass, and William Wells Brown. This is my story, and the story of many others whose histories are not documented but equally important. My great-grandfather’s journey to this country under false pretenses, only to discover he was a slave, is a testament to the resilience and determination that runs in my family.

The Journey Begins

My great-grandfather arrived in the United States in the late 1850s, unaware of the harsh reality that awaited him. Despite the deception, he refused to surrender to his circumstances and instead chose to seize every opportunity that came his way, determined to build a better life for his family.

A Legacy of Strength

The qualities of pluck, initiative, and resourcefulness that my great-grandfather displayed were not stifled by the oppressive system of slavery. His story is a testament to the indomitable spirit that runs through my veins and the veins of countless others whose stories may never be told.

Conclusion

As we reflect on the stories of those who came before us, let us remember that the truth lies in the narratives of those who lived through them. I encourage you to share your own stories of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. What challenges have you overcome to carve out a better future for yourself and your loved ones? Dr. Allen needs to speak to every black church in Florida and all the black community in Florida face to face in good faith conversation, so that they can get a point of view from him, not just through interviews.

  3. @riddler5

This supposedly educated man with pluck in his family deems to supplant the terrible history of slavery in the United States with one individuals efforts to overcome slavery's unimaginable savagery . How much of a simpleton can a person get. He's adopted the bootlicking perspective of the proverbial "house n*****".

  4. @whxxp2x

White people love him because he makes them feel better about being r@cist and benefitting for years from its inherent wealth and resource disparity.

  5. @paulreuben7343

What a man! God bless this great man.

  6. @TheCheshier88

So this guy is a tether and not a foundational black American. Therefore, he don't get to speak on our issues

  7. @allen7986

William allen is an desantis appointed republican political hack charged with inserting a political agenda into school curriculums. He is not an historian but a retired political science professor. I am an history.

  8. @b1prints73

How dare he place himself among those great Foundational Black Americans! He's only great among the people in this thread!

  9. @juanitabursley2002

First, I respect Dr Allen so much.
Second, Democrats will consider him an Uncle Tom. He speaks against their racist narrative.

Fantastic. We have to grapple w/the good, bad & ugly in life- ours & our history. All of it, not just the easy, bright & beautiful, not just the sad & terrible. So we can grow & take lessons in all of it. Focusing just on bad stuff paralyzes & causes us to wither & fade. Just the nice stuff makes you shallow & indifferent.

  11. @Brad5161

    So pluck overcame slavery?

    Right.

  12. @mewtishaughton2094

She will never understand because she is from the flip side.

This guy is such an educator, why is he being persecuted?! U would think students would want to here his panels.

  20. @jillcolvin4196

Dr. Allen – your story is inspiring. "Pluck" is a common trait for most Americans of my grandparents generation. My grandparents didnt have to overcome slavery but they came from poverty and had the "pluck" to fight through adversity for a better life. THAT is the real AMERICAN story.

So many white people tend to love ANY BLACK PERSON who make even the slightest sentiment that slavery was not bad. Or who have some morbid thinking that slavery was some type of benefit to the enslaved. No matter who is talking, slavery was the worse and most evilest part of satan's plan in this country, and the only benefit from it were to white people. No one who was ever a slave would ever say that being dehumanized, whipped, raped, tortured, kidnapped, separated from their newborn and adolescent children, and murdered would say that there was any benefit from it. They dealt with the horror's, that is not a benefit it is AMAZING RESILIENCE. They managed not to lose their mind at the constant torture and dehumanization, that is not a benefitting, that is A STRONG SPIRIT. They kept hope and did not allow the horror to keep them sad 24/7, that is not a benefit that is AMAZING FAITH. They were resourceful and learned trades in spite of their evil overseers, that is not a benefit that is CREATIVITY AND RESOURCEFULNESS. Only an evil mind would think that anything AT ALL beneficial came from slavery.
